Aliso Viejo, California — AZ Displays, Inc., announces availability of a new type of LCD modules that can survive extreme low temperatures as low as –40 degrees Celsius.

Conventional LCD modules normally operate within a temperature range from –20 to +70 C. Their performance is quite limited in low latitude areas or in extreme cold environments.

This new low-temp solution not only enables LCD modules to operate at –40 degrees C, it also spares a user from having to adjust contrast as the temperature changes. The technology utilizes a special heater made of a sheet of ITO glass that is placed next to the LCD. The heater is connected to the PCB by metal pins and is controlled by a thermistor (temperature sensor), which is automatically started when the temperature goes down. Built-in thermistor turns on the heater at –7 to –9 C.

Super low temp. displays require an additional power supply of about 20V on top of the conventional voltage (normally 4.5V) for the built-in LCD controller.

Heater-based LCD modules can be used in a wide range of outdoor applications, such as gas pumps, vending machines, pay phones, automotive, and military equipment.

While our company plans on utilizing the heater technology to redesign most existing products into optional super wide temp. versions, this LCD solution is for now available for new custom designs and as a first standard model p/n ACM1602YE-FL-YBE (16 characters by 2 rows with yellow-green LED backlight).
